How to Lay a Sub-Base for a Driveway (Step-by-Step UK Guide)

Get the Base Right or the Driveway Fails

If your sub-base isn’t done properly, your driveway will sink, move, and cost you more to fix later.

This guide shows you exactly how to lay a solid sub-base using MOT Type 1 — the standard choice for UK driveways and patios.

What You’ll Need

  • MOT Type 1 sub-base
  • Wacker plate (compactor)
  • Shovel / rake
  • String lines & level
  • Edge restraints (kerbs or edging)

Step 1: Dig Out the Area

Remove all topsoil and soft ground.

  • Typical depth: 150–250mm total
  • Ensure ground is firm and stable
  • Remove any roots or loose material

👉 If you skip this, your base will fail — simple as that.

Step 2: Install Edging (Critical Step)

Before laying sub-base, install your edge restraints.

  • Keeps everything locked in place
  • Prevents movement over time
  • Gives you clean, straight lines

Step 3: Lay MOT Type 1 in Layers

Don’t dump it all in at once.

  • Lay in 50–75mm layers
  • Spread evenly across the area
  • Lightly level before compacting

Step 4: Compact Each Layer Properly

This is where most people go wrong.

  • Use a wacker plate
  • Compact each layer thoroughly
  • Repeat until fully solid

👉 Proper compaction = no sinking later

Step 5: Build to Final Height

Continue layering and compacting until:

  • You reach your required level
  • Surface is flat and solid
  • Falls (drainage slope) are correct

Typical fall:

  • 1:60 away from property

Step 6: Ready for the Next Layer

Once your sub-base is complete:

  • Add sharp sand (for block paving) here
  • Or lay directly for certain finishes

Your base should now be:
✔ Solid
✔ Level
✔ Fully compacted

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • ❌ Not digging deep enough
  • ❌ Laying Type 1 in one thick layer
  • ❌ Skipping compaction
  • ❌ Using poor-quality material

👉 Do it properly once — avoid costly repairs later

How Much Sub-Base Do You Need for a Driveway?

Getting the depth right is one thing — ordering the right amount is what actually matters.

As a rough guide:

  • 100mm depth → around 8–10m² per bulk bag
  • 150mm depth → around 5–7m² per bulk bag

Most standard driveways will need multiple bulk bags of MOT Type 1 depending on size.
