How Much Sharp Sand Do I Need for Block Paving?

How Much Sharp Sand Do I Need for Block Paving?

Getting the amount of sharp sand right is one of the most important parts of any block paving installation. Order too little and the job stops. Order too much and you’re left with unnecessary cost and waste.

This guide explains exactly how much sharp sand you need for block paving, based on area size and recommended installation depths.

What Is Sharp Sand Used for in Block Paving?

Sharp sand is used as the laying course directly beneath block paving. It allows the blocks to be levelled accurately while providing a stable, free-draining base once compacted.

Unlike building sand, sharp sand has a coarser texture which helps prevent movement and sinking over time. For this reason, building sand should never be used for block paving installations.

Recommended Sharp Sand Depth for Block Paving

The standard industry recommendation is:

  • 50–75 mm compacted depth

  • Laid slightly higher before compaction to allow for settlement

This depth works for domestic driveways, patios, and paths, including premium block paving ranges such as those supplied by Marshalls.

How Much Sharp Sand Do I Need? (Simple Rule)

As a general rule:

1 tonne of sharp sand covers approximately 10–12 m² at a 50 mm depth

Coverage will reduce if you increase the depth to 75 mm.

Sharp Sand Quantity Calculator (Typical Examples)

Area Size Sand Depth Approx. Quantity
20 m² 50 mm ~2 tonnes
30 m² 50 mm ~3 tonnes
40 m² 50 mm ~4 tonnes
50 m² 75 mm ~6–7 tonnes
55 m² (average driveway) 75 mm ~7 tonnes

Tip: Always allow a small margin for wastage and levelling adjustments, particularly on larger areas.

Bulk Bag or Loose Sharp Sand – Which Is Best?

  • Bulk bags are ideal for driveways and larger projects

  • Loose loads can be more cost-effective for very large areas

  • Small bags are best suited to minor repairs and edging work

For most driveway installations, bulk bags offer the best balance of cost, convenience, and coverage.

Do I Need Anything Else Beneath the Sharp Sand?

Yes. Sharp sand is not a sub-base.

A typical block paving build-up should include:

  • Compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base

  • Sharp sand laying course

  • Block paving

  • Kiln-dried sand for jointing (after installation)

Skipping or reducing the sub-base depth is one of the most common causes of driveway failure.
