How Much Does a New Patio Cost? How to Keep Your Patio Budget Under Control

Planning a new patio does not have to mean handing over the whole project – and the entire budget – without knowing what the materials actually cost.

One of the simplest ways to stay in control is to buy the paving and materials yourself. Whether you are laying the patio yourself or using a landscaper or paving contractor for the installation, sourcing the materials directly lets you choose exactly what you want and understand the material cost before the work begins.

Start with the size of your patio

Measure the length and width of the area to work out the approximate square metre coverage you need. Once you know the size, comparing paving options becomes much easier and you can start building the project around a realistic material budget.

It is also worth allowing extra material for cuts and wastage, particularly where the patio has corners, curves or a more detailed laying pattern.

Why buy your own patio materials?

Buying your own materials gives you much clearer visibility over the project. You can compare different paving ranges, choose the finish you actually want and know what has been ordered before installation starts.

It also means the labour and material costs can be considered separately, which can make the whole project easier to budget.

Porcelain or natural stone?

Porcelain paving is a popular choice for modern gardens because of its consistent appearance, low water absorption and relatively easy maintenance.

Natural stone, including Indian sandstone, gives a more traditional look with natural colour and texture variation between individual slabs. Both can create an excellent patio – the right choice depends on the style you want and the amount you want to spend on the materials.

Remember the materials underneath the paving

The paving slabs are only one part of the job. Depending on the project and ground conditions, a patio can also require MOT Type 1, sharp sand, cement, paving primer, jointing compound and membrane.

This is where people can easily underestimate what they need, particularly when ordering for a first patio project.

Make budgeting easier with a Complete Patio Pack

Our Complete Patio Packs are designed to make ordering simpler by bringing the main materials for the project together in one package.

Instead of trying to work out every product separately, you can choose a pack based around the patio you are planning and get a much clearer picture of the material cost from the outset.

You can also browse our wider patio paving range if you would rather choose the paving first and build the rest of the order around it.

Build the project around your budget

A new patio does not automatically need to become an expensive, open-ended project. Start with the measurements, choose the paving, work out the supporting materials and then decide whether you are installing it yourself or paying for labour.

That way, you stay in control of the products, specification and material spend from the beginning.
