Can a Portable Air Conditioner Heat a Room? How Heating Mode Works
Portable air conditioners are usually associated with summer cooling, but some models can also provide useful heat when the temperature drops. These are commonly sold as hot and cold portable air conditioners.
The important point is that not every portable air conditioner has a heating function, and the way heating mode works depends on the model. If year-round use matters to you, check the specification before buying.
How does heating mode work on a portable air conditioner?
Many hot and cold portable air conditioners use a reversible refrigeration system. In cooling mode, the unit removes heat from the room and sends it outside. In heating mode, the refrigeration cycle is reversed so that heat is delivered into the room instead.
This is different from simply running the fan. The machine must have a dedicated heating mode built into it.
Do you still need the exhaust hose in heating mode?
That depends on the particular machine. Some portable hot and cold air conditioners still require the exhaust hose to be connected correctly while heating, while others have different requirements depending on operating mode.
The safest approach is to follow the instructions supplied with the unit rather than assuming the hose can be removed. If you are using the machine for cooling, the hot exhaust air must normally be discharged outside. Our portable air conditioner venting guide explains the main options for UK windows and doors.
What about water drainage when heating?
Portable air conditioners remove moisture from the air as they operate, and some hot and cold models may produce condensate in heating mode as well as cooling mode.
Some machines can manage part of this moisture internally, while others may require continuous drainage in certain modes or conditions. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions for the model you are using.

When is heating mode useful?
A portable hot and cold unit can be useful where you want one machine for more than just summer cooling. Typical uses include bedrooms, home offices, garden rooms, workshops, temporary accommodation and rooms that need occasional additional heat.
They can also be useful during the change between seasons when you do not necessarily want to heat the whole property.
Can a portable air conditioner replace your main heating?
It depends on the room, the unit and how you intend to use it. Portable air conditioners are generally best thought of as room-by-room heating and cooling appliances rather than a direct replacement for a complete central-heating system.
Room size, insulation, outside temperature, glazing and heat loss all affect performance. Heating output and operating temperature limits also vary considerably between models.
What should you check before buying a hot and cold portable AC?
- Whether the unit genuinely has a dedicated heating mode
- The quoted cooling and heating outputs
- The recommended room size
- Whether the exhaust hose is required in heating mode
- Whether continuous drainage is recommended
- The operating temperature range
- Noise levels and fan settings
- Whether the electrical supply is suitable

Hot and cold air conditioner or air cooler?
They are very different products. A genuine portable air conditioner uses a refrigeration system and normally requires an exhaust route when cooling. An air cooler uses water evaporation and does not provide the same type of refrigerated cooling.

Final thoughts
If you want a portable appliance that can be useful beyond the summer months, a hot and cold air conditioner can make more sense than a cooling-only model. The key is to check exactly how the individual unit operates, particularly its exhaust and drainage requirements, rather than assuming every portable AC works in the same way.
