Block Paving Driveway Installation in Crowfield, Suffolk
At UK Building Supplies, we don’t just supply paving products — we also get to see how those materials perform once they are installed on real projects.
This recent driveway project in Crowfield, Suffolk was completed by UK Contracts Group using materials supplied through UK Building Supplies.
The job involved removing the existing gravel driveway and rebuilding the area with traditional Bracken block paving, a contrasting dark border and new drainage across the entrance.

From Gravel Driveway to Block Paving
The existing gravel driveway was fully excavated, with the old surface and unsuitable material removed from site before the new driveway construction began.

Building a Strong Base
Once the area had been dug out, UK Contracts Group installed a 100mm dry lean concrete base. Each stage was compacted thoroughly with a whacker plate before the next layer was added.
This preparation is what gives a block paved driveway its long-term stability. The visible finish is important, but the layers underneath are what help prevent settlement and movement once the driveway is in regular use.
Edgings and Drainage
The perimeter edgings were laid on a sand and cement bed, including the curved section around the lawn. A drainage channel was also installed across the entrance of the driveway to collect surface water. Buy your sand and cement.

Laying the Bracken Block Paving
After the base and edgings were complete, the laying sand was screeded to the correct level and the Bracken block paving was laid across the driveway.
The blocks were carefully cut around the perimeter, drainage channel and curved edging. A dark contrasting border was used around the main Bracken paving to give the finished driveway a defined, traditional appearance.

Final Compaction and Kiln-Dried Sand
Once the paving had been laid and cut, the finished surface was compacted with a whacker plate. Kiln-dried sand was then brushed into the joints before final compaction locked the blocks together.
Every layer of the driveway construction was compacted as the work progressed, helping to create a solid and durable finished surface. Kiln dried sand can be purchased here
The Finished Result
The completed driveway has transformed the front of the property. The Bracken paving gives a warm, traditional finish, while the dark double border and curved edge add definition and detail.
